When preparing a talk for students I asked friends & colleagues “what is the single piece of advice you would give to anybody wanting to purse a career in the media”
Your qualifications are worthless, your portfolio is priceless.

My media career advice is very similar. Self generate your own work – doesn’t matter what you do, just do SOMETHING. That will impress.

Be doing your dream already – making content / finding stories / sharing stories / work experience. Get good at hearing no & carrying on. Be prepared to work long hours on crap pay somewhere away from loved ones. Be the nicest, earliest, last to leave, kindest, on it. Helpful.

You really, really, really don’t have to go to Uni if you don’t want to! Experience is just as useful in this industry.
