In making this series Lee always talked passionately about mainstream comedy, growing up loving Crackerjack and Morecambe and Wise and how the variety show didn’t seem to exist anymore. This was his attempt to re-invent it. We worked together on the format and the casting and each week Lee brought the Radio 2 audience a mixture of stand up, sketches and music. The show was written around the guests, a pop star and a stand up comedian. In the grand tradition of Crackerjack guests were asked to take part in the sketches and not quite keeping with that tradition were humiliated in spoof promotional interviews. Lee though was the star of the show and the glue that held it all together. The Lee Mack show was an old fashioned radio format re-invented by one of the countries most original and compelling comedians. It was nominated for a Sony Radio Award in 2006.
