I was Kevin Greening’s Producer at Radio 1 from 1995 – 1996. Kevin & I were doing weekend breakfast to Chris Evans weekday breakfast during the heady days of Britpop. Within a month of joining Radio 1 I persuaded Mike Flowers to record a feature, ┬ácovering a different Britpop hit each week. His first easy listening homage “Wonderwall” was so good, Chris rang the studio and asked if he could “borrow” it for his show the next day. We let him (with the proviso he promote the weekend breakfast show, each time he played it) & by the end of the next week Mike was being courted by all the major record labels to release “Wonderwall”. Within two weeks he signed with London Records & the race for Christmas #1 was on…

In the end London could not match Sony Records distribution machine with Sony also discounting Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song” two weeks before Christmas ensuring he had the #1 single that year.

Kevin & I worked with Mike once more, producing Easy Night for Radio 1 when we were able to persuade Burt Bacharach to meet & perform with Mike.

Kevin was the most generous, warm hearted & cleverest of men. We became close friends and he was at my wedding. His death came far too early & he deserves to be remembered as a quite fabulous broadcaster…
